Software Engineer (UK) - Mayday

About Mayday

We’re an accounting-tech startup building automation to save finance teams from the pain of manual work. We’re hyper ambitious with a huge long-term vision. We will mend month-end and enable real-time accounting.

We’re founded by two experienced entrepreneurs: David Tuck, an accountant then CFO by training who founded Chaser; and James Griffin, a software engineer who was CTO at Idio (now Optimizely) and Rungway.

We’ve had a brilliant first three years. We’ve built an incredible initial team in the UK and Australia. We have amazing reviews from our customers. We won Xero’s Emerging App Partner of the Year Award for 2023. We’ve secured pre-seed investment from A* backers.

David has spoken extensively about our journey on his build-in-public blog, Starting Up Again. Our values (with the link to the relevant post explaining each) are:

The Role

You will report directly to the CPTO and work alongside the whole business to deliver next-generation accounting technology. Since our product is deep accounting tech, familiarity with accounting is a bonus, and at a minimum you're willing to learn its concepts and processes. All employees are supported in their personal development with both time and budget, so we will help you gain the knowledge you need.

Mayday is headquartered in the UK, and this role is open to candidates in the UK, preferably in or close to London.

Since Mayday is a startup, you will be required to wear multiple hats and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable environment. As a small team, your contributions will be significant and highly visible. You'll be asked to find pragmatic solutions which allow us to test product hypotheses rapidly, and once they're proven, build scalable, dependable, and well-tested product for our customers to use.

Our tech stack is React with Typescript, Spring Boot with Java/Kotlin/Groovy, and MySQL, and is hosted on AWS. Ideally, you're an expert in at least one of those tools, but it's ok if you aren't - we’re looking for great people, so your experience is more valuable than the specifics.

About You

  • You're an experienced engineer with multiple years of working in startups;
  • You're an expert in at least one of frontend or backend programming;
  • You have a strong, pragmatic problem solving mindset;
  • You're comfortable working both collaboratively and on your own as location and task requires.

The Details

  • Salary is up to £90k depending on experience
  • Share options from day 1;
  • 25 days’ paid holiday, plus public holidays;
  • Personal learning and development budget;
  • 1 day a week in person in Central London (likely more during onboarding)

Next steps

Please get in touch at careers@getmayday.com. If you have an up-to-date CV, then great, but please don’t go to loads of effort to produce one if you don’t. A link to your LinkedIn profile will be fine.

Our interview process is: an initial interview call of around 30 minutes, a second, more technical interview, followed by a final round where we contract you to work with us for a day on a real Mayday problem.
